Kirti Mandir - Miners Memorial, Muirkirk

Miners Memorial, Muirkirk, by Kirti Mandir

One of the finest examples of Kirti’s work is the Miner’s Memorial at Muirkirk, Kirti’s adopted home village.  The memorial was commissioned by the Muirkirk Enterprise Group to honour the ninety miners who have died whilst working at local mines.  The sculpture is seven feet high, cast in bronze and stands on five feet high solid polished granite plinth.  The names of the ninety miners who died are engraved on the plinth with 23.5 carets gold leaf.

The memorial was unveiled by the first minister of Scotland, Jack McConnell MSP, on 21st June, 2004 in the presence of Des Browne MP and Scotland’s Justice Minister, Cathy Jamieson MSP.
